Household moving is a big industry with a lot of companies that are juggling for each consumer’s business. There are so many advertisements and special deals splashed across your computer screen, your television and in the yellow pages of your phonebook, it is easy to see how difficult it is to know which moving company to trust.

When you call your potential household moving company, there are some standard questions to ask them which will help you determine which company will have the best prices and services to match your needs.

• What are your rates based on?
  Most household movers will provide both a rate per pound and a rate per distance. Pass on any company that offers only a quote based on cubic feet. For short distances, a company will often only offer a rate based on weight. For long distances most companies will offer a weight and distance rate.
• Will you do an in-home final estimate?
  For an accurate estimate, depend only on a company that will conduct an in-home quote before they give you a final written estimate. In addition, remember that only a written estimate is acceptable before your final moving date. Though initial moving estimates are commonly done over the phone, understand that it is impossible to provide a concrete, written estimate for items that the company has never seen. Any final written estimate should be made only after a representative has visited your home.
