Moving Day with Pets
Moving to a new home is a big choice to make, so imagine how stressful it is when you didn’t make the choice and don’t know where you are going, or for how long. Your pets have little understanding of the moving process to a new home beyond that the fact that most everything they know is being changed. This results in stressed out pets and a difficult time for owners.
Moving Your Cats to your New Home
- Plan out your pet care before the first moving service van arrives. Place a notice on the door so that removal men and family know that this door should be kept shut.
- Before the removal van arrives it is advisable to place your cat in one room. Your personal bedroom is an ideal location.
- Put the cat carrier, cat bed, food bowl, water bowl and litter tray in this room.
- Everything that you need for your pet should be easily accessible in one place to minimize the chance that your cats will be frightened and run away.
- This last bedroom should be the final point that anyone enters. When every other room in the house is moved and loaded, the “cat” room is last. Go in yourself and put your cats into their carriers securely before you open the door again to let the movers in.
- Once you hare in your new home, before you take your cats out of their carriers, place a synthetic feline pheromone diffuser in a floor level socket in the new room where your cat will be placed for now. This will help stabilize your cats’ moods and keep their stress levels down.
Moving with pets is easier with the help of a little planning.
