Moving Trucks, Not Boxes
Moving trucks are more than a big box on wheels, though that is how many people view them and inevitably treat them. By envisioning a large moving truck as a simple box, people often pack it like they would a box and end up wasting about half of the available space.
Understanding the amount of space that is required for your move is a major step towards knowing what kind of trailer you will require. A standard moving trailer is generally reserved for anyone who has requested a self service move and any unused space will be filled with commercial goods, but a truck rental will be assigned based on your estimate of space needed.
Keep in mind that for each foot in length of the trailer, you will have the full width and height of trailer space for loading. If you have a 9’ foot high trailer that is 8 feet wide then each linear foot would be 1’ X 9 X 8’.
Since you will not have the luxury of packing the trailer as you would a box, because you only have one end to load from, not the entire top, you essentially need to plan out your loading procedure. Knowing that you have the full height of the trailer to work with, start at the back of the trailer and pack up to the ceiling before moving on to the next space.
Understanding that a moving trailer cannot be packed like a box is the first step towards utilizing all of the space in the moving truck and getting your money’s worth!
